Punjab Kings returned home to Mullanpur but put on a sorry display at home against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday. Opting to bat first in the PBKS vs KKR game, the hosts stumbled to a paltry 111 all out, despite using an impact substitute to bolster their batting. Harshit Rana, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy ran through Shreyas Iyer and Co, with the final run out of Arshdeep Singh painting a sorry picture of Punjab Kings’ return home.
Punjab Kings fall like pins in clueless innings
Punjab Kings got off to a flying start, only for their innings to fall completely apart at home. Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya put on 39 for the first wicket in just 3.1 overs before Kolkata Knight Riders ran through the batting lineup. Despite getting a six off Harshit Rana’s first delivery, the left-hander went after a short delivery again, only to be caught in the deep.
Poor shot selection was the norm, with captain Shreyas Iyer chasing a wide delivery only to be caught at deep point. Later, Prabhsimran, who got 2 sixes off Harshit Rana, tried to slice a wide delivery, only to find Ramandeep Singh at point. Nehal Wadhera was also rushed for pace and was dismissed by Anrich Nortje.
On a wicket that aided spinners a little, Punjab Kings were exposed in their inability to take on the tweakers. Debutant Josh Inglis was cleaned up by Varun Chakravarthy. The Australian keeper tried to slog across the line only to lose his stumps. Glenn Maxwell also completely misread the carrom ball from Varun to be bowled over. The impact sub, Suryansh Shedge also gave up his wicket to a loosener, who edges it Quinton de Kock behind the stumps off Narine. Marco Jansen personified PBKS’ horror display, dancing down the track only to be yorked completely and lose his wicket.
The final wicket evening saw a complete communication error, with Xavier Barlett running himself out. The PBKS innings folded for 111, their fourth lowest total ever in IPL history.
