Indian captain Rohit Sharma addressed the press conference on the eve of the first one-day international against England. After hinting at Varun Chakravarthy’s inclusion for the ICC Champions Trophy, the Hitman has called for fans not to judge Mohammed Shami yet.
Mohammed Shami: From recovery to resumption
As we all know, Shami made his international comeback after over 400 days when he took the new ball in the Rajkot T20I against England. It was his first game since the ODI World Cup 2023 Final against Australia. Despite racking up decent speeds, Shami looked undercooked. He took three wickets in a couple of outings, leaking runs at 9.09. He wasn’t at his best even while playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) for Kolkata as well, where he claimed 11 wickets at a SR of 19.00.
But it must be noted that in SMAT, he played 9 games in just a span of 18 days—that is, a T20 game every two days. For a player who had surgery and then a swollen knee, it was a remarkable feat. Considering his wealth of experience and knack for stepping up in big occasions, the BCCI included him in the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. In the same vein, Rohit Sharma is also hopeful for Shami to roar back and find his old mojo as quickly as possible.
Rohit Sharma on Mohammed Shami
Rohit Sharma reflected Shami’s importance in the time when there are dark clouds over Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness. Banking on his experience, Rohit is hopeful and said:
“He has not played cricket for 1 or 1.5 years. So, don’t judge the player so soon. He has been playing cricket for the last 10-12 years. He has performed for the team. You can see how he has bowled in the World Cup.”
Rohit Sharma suggested that his recent form could determine his chances of playing in upcoming matches, including the Champions Trophy. However, he emphasized the importance of staying present and making decisions that benefit the team, rather than dwelling on past performances.
“It is equally important for you as well as for us. Because we only see what has happened recently. But we don’t see what a person has done for a long time. Our memory is short. We don’t think much about what he has done in the last few years. What he has done 6-8 months ago. We only see what has happened recently. What has happened in the last series,” Rohit explained.
