A costly mistake from Heinrich Klassen handed Mumbai Indians opener Ryan Rickelton a reprieve in the MI vs SRH clash on Thursday. Rickelton was caught out off Zeeshan Ansari’s bowling, but was later called back after the umpires called it a no-ball.
Why was Ryan Rickelton not out?
Sunrisers Hyderabad thought they had struck gold after the time out with the seventh over accounting for Ryan Rickelton. The Mumbai Indians opener slapped a looping ball straight to Pat Cummins and was back in the dugout. Suryakumar Yadav was already on the ground before the umpires changed the decision.
The fourth umpire called it a no ball after Heinrich Klassen’s gloves were in front of the stumps when Rickelton hit the ball. As a result it was a deemed a illegal delivery, with the MI opener called back to the crease.
What do the laws say?
As per the MCC laws, a wicketkeeper is not allowed to touch the ball until it either passes the stumps or is touched by the batter. If the keeper moves too early, then the umpires can reprimand the keeper and call it a no-ball. While Klassen did not collect the ball in Ryan Rickelton’s instance, he still had his hands ahead of the stumps while the Proteas played at it.
Klassen’s mistake falls under rules regulated for unfair movement (Law 27.4), with the umpires well placed to call it an illegal delivery and award an extra run to the batting side.
