It’s often the case in life that those who are successful get what they want. And that might be the case for the three most accomplished Indian Premier League (IPL) teams as well. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have made the most playoffs, reached the most finals, and are the only three teams that have more than 1 IPL trophy.
And a reason for their success has been their home ground. All three get what they desire. You can say it goes hand in hand. MI, CSK and KKR get pitches they want at home because they are successful, or they are successful because of the pitches they get at home.
Home advantage for IPL ‘Big 3’
KKR gets pitches made for Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy. This holds true even though this is an issue that KKR is having with the curator of the Eden Gardens. CSK is playing three spinners, and the average score there might be the lowest of all grounds. MI, meanwhile, usually opts for bouncy tracks where pacers and batters both get a bit of both.
Former CSK player Cheteshwar Pujara believes that these teams can’t complain about the pitches.
“If you speak about MI, CSK, KKR – I don’t think that’s the case (them not getting pitches they ask for). Any other franchise, I can still understand. Those (three) franchises make sure they get what they want. Their strength has been when they play at home,” Pujara said on ESPNcricinfo TimeOut.
CSK can’t cry foul
The Indian Test great made these comments after CSK head coach Stephen Fleming claimed that they don’t know how the pitch has been playing at the MA Chidambaram Stadium for the last couple of years after the Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat them at home after 17 years.
“It is (surprising) because at CSK you can’t complain; it’s one franchise where they’ve been preparing pitches according to their strengths. You should (use home advantage); if he’s saying that (there is no home advantage), they don’t have a say, then I’m quite surprised,” Pujara added.
