Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner Digvesh Rathi is in the headlines, not just for his impactful performances in IPL 2025 but also for his celebration. Rathi’s unique celebrations after taking wickets have caught attention, leading to penalties by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Despite his contributions, Rathi has been fined twice for his celebratory gestures, sparking debate about the fairness of these decisions. Rathi has been fined Rs 5,62,500 already.
Simon Doull’s defense of Digvesh Rathi
Former New Zealand cricketer and IPL expert on JioHotstar, Simon Doull expressed his disagreement with the penalties imposed on Rathi. Doull criticised the inconsistency in officiating, that senior Indian players often engage in more aggressive celebrations without facing consequences. He said, “The team have got to be paying that (the fines). I don’t like it. I love the celebrations, I don’t think he has done anything at all wrong. I’ve seen senior Indian players do way worse, be in your face, and not get a fine. They are making an example out of a young man who is what, making a note in his notebook?”
The context behind Rathi’s celebrations
Rathi’s celebratory act began when he first dismissed Punjab Kings batter Priyansh Arya. It was later clarified that Rathi and Arya are good friends, and the celebration was meant as light-hearted banter. Despite this, Rathi faced penalties for his gestures. Shahbaz Ahmed, a fellow LSG spinner, mentioned, “Priyansh Arya (who Digvesh dismissed to bring out the celebration for the first time) is his very good friend. He did it on a friendly note, but since he is on the verge of suspension, I hope he doesn’t repeat it.” Rathi was fined 25 percent of his match fee and handed one demerit point from BCCI.
Later, Rathi repeated the “notebook celebration” after taking Naman Dhir’s wicket. This resulted in a fine of 50% of his match fee and two more demerit points, marking his second Level 1 breach of the season.
Adjusted celebration against KKR
Aware of the potential for further penalties, Rathi altered his celebratory style during LSG’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday. Instead of directing the gesture towards a player, he performed his signature celebration on the ground, showing an attempt to comply with the regulations while maintaining his unique style.
