Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have always relied on their core group over the years, backing them to the T, even if form betrays them. However, while the five-time champions have built their legacy on that formula, it hasn’t been quite the case in IPL 2025. MS Dhoni, back at the helm, has given in to chopping and changing in a bid to turn around the side’s fortunes. That trick, however, has not yielded any results, with CSK rooted to the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table.

CSK’s batting musical chairs: Dhoni’s constant changes hurting?

CSK have tried four different opening pairs and four different batters at No.3. The result: Chennai have lost three or more wickets four times in IPL 2025, equaling their tally from the last four seasons combined. Ravindra Jadeja’s promotion to no.4 midway through the season has also not worked. The left-hander has 1 half-century, but has largely scored below the par strike-rate to compound CSK’s woes.

Dhoni’s move to promote Sam Curran to No.3 is the only move that has worked so far. The English all-rounder smashed a quick-fire half-century against PBKS on Wednesday. But it is the only move that has paid dividends so far. Dewald Brevis has got good starts in both his innings, but an argument for him to bat higher up the order could be made.

Shivam Dube has been consigned to a finisher’s role, in a season where the left-hander has struck at 133.51. Deepak Hooda is also another option lost in CSK’s middle-order muddle. MS Dhoni, while finally promoting himself later in the innings, has also done little of substance. At 43, Dhoni cannot bat for long periods, making him a rather odd fit in CSK’s batting order.

No CSK batter other than Ruturaj Gaikwad has scored multiple half-centuries this season. Dube is the only batter to have hit double figures in number of sixes hit. CSK have largely struggled as a batting unit, but Dhoni’s constant rotation for sure isn’t helping.
