The Afghanistan women’s cricket team, who have been out of the international circuit for a long time, could make their return to the game again. According to media reports, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has launched a task force dedicated to supporting Afghan women cricketers who relocated after the Taliban’s return to power. This will help the team get direct funding, elite coaching, and enhanced facilities from the ICC directly.
Collaboration with global cricket bodies
In a collaborative effort, the ICC has reached agreements with cricket associations in Australia, India, and England to provide support for the displaced Afghan women cricketers. ICC chairman Jay Shah said that the commitment to fostering inclusivity within the sport. “The ICC believes this (support fund) will not only help preserve the sporting careers of Afghan women cricketers but also reinforce the sport’s role as a unifying force that transcends borders and adversity,” Shah said.
Afghan women cricketers in Australia
After their displacement from Afghanistan, many Afghan women cricketers settled in Australia and now they are participating in local club cricket across cities like Melbourne. In January, they played an exhibition match at Melbourne’s Junction Oval against a Cricket Without Borders XI, supported by the Australian government.
Ongoing challenges and advocacy
Despite being a full ICC member, the Afghanistan Cricket Board cannot currently field a women’s team due to the Taliban’s restrictions. This has led to criticism and a refusal by countries like England and Australia to engage in direct series against Afghanistan.
The success of the Afghanistan men’s team in reaching the semifinals of the Twenty20 World Cup reignited the women’s team’s advocacy for ICC support. Their initial appeal in 2023 sought assistance to establish a refugee team in Australia capable of participating in international cricket. The ICC’s recent actions signify an important step in empowering Afghan women cricketers and reinforcing the role of sports in fostering unity amidst adversity.
